An excerpt from the section on legislative developments discusses the topical issue of paid parental leave:
'A general scheme of the Parental Leave and Benefit Bill 2019 was published on 23 April 2019. Once enacted, the legislation will provide for the following:
- Relevant employed and self-employed parents will have access to paid parental leave during the first year following the birth or adoption of their child. Paid parental leave will initially be limited to two weeks per parent but will increase to seven weeks by 2021.
- Male same-sex couples will have access to adoptive leave and benefit.'
